What Causes Bulimia

Brief introduction on Bulimia

Bulimia, sometimes also known as Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder.  It is the process of binge eating and purging. Binge eating means eating great quantity of food in a little period of time and purging means removing it out by forcible vomiting, laxative abuse or excessive workout. The psychological thinking of the person following this process is to avoid gaining weight and self maintenance. Sadly, they fail to realize that they are actually harming their health by doing so.

What causes Bulimia

It is often referred to as a psychological eating disorder. It is more often seen in young women than compared to men. The following factors could be responsible for the development of Bulimia in a person:

Hereditary:

Genes play an important role here. If close relative or a sibling has been or is suffering from such eating disorders then you are likely to develop it as well. A deficiency in the brain chemical called serotonin might as well be responsible for developing Bulimia.

Emotional disorders:

Those already suffering from psychological and emotional problems can easily experience Bulimia. Emotional disorders could be like low self esteem, difficulty in managing anger, reckless behavior, and relationship issues and so on.

One of the behaviors that contribute to the development of bulimia is dieting. Too much dieting can at sometimes give burst to binge eating, which is later followed by guilt leading to purging.

Treatment for Bulimia

Different types of treatments are suggested for bulimia such as psychotherapy, medications (antidepressants), education on weight and nutrition and even hospitalization (in case of severe bulimia). The most effective of the treatments is the combination of antidepressants and psychotherapy. Other than medical help, emotional help from family and friends will be a great aid. Bulimia can be treated, but can reoccur at times of any personal or professional crises.
