Brief introduction on Bad Dreams
Bad dreams are commonly referred to as Nightmares. Dream, which take place while you are fast asleep and leave you back with a feeling of terror, anxiety, fear and grief are known as bad dreams. These normally take place middle of the night and wake you up with a feeling of horror and sweat. Bad dreams are more common during childhood and become less frequent as you age. According to the studies, women have more nightmares than compared to men.
What causes bad dreams?
- Loosing a loved one (death / breakup):
When you loose a loved one, you are under great mental pressure, totally distressed and broken. At such times, the chances of getting bad dreams are too high due to the bad state of mind.
- Consuming alcohol in excess / Alcohol withdrawal:
Alcohol consumption in excess causes bad dreams. Sudden alcohol withdrawal also contributes to the same.
- Pregnancy:
Pregnancy is believed to be one of the reasons for getting bad dreams.
- Drugs side effects:
Usage of certain medications for a long period of time is responsible for causing bad dreams to a person. Tranquilizers, beta blockers and antidepressants have been held responsible for bad dreams. Also due to sudden withdrawal from sleeping pills, the chances of bad dreams are increased.
- Sleep Apnea / sleep disorders:
Breathing abnormally during sleep is a cause for getting bad dreams. Sleeping disorders such as sleep terror disorder or narcolepsy also contribute towards bad dreams.
- Diet consumed right before sleeping:
Another cause for bad dreams is the consumption of caffeine or fatty and spicy food right before going to bed.
- Stress:
Stress from day to day activities leave an effect on the mind of a person, thus causing bad dreams.
- Fever or illness:
If you are suffering from some kind of sickness or fever, bad dreams might occur.
Treatment for bad dreams
You can consult a physician if you think the reason for getting bad dreams could be due to some medications, sleeping disorders, alcohol or improper diet (before going to bed). You can talk to your family, friends or also visit a counselor to find out the exact cause for getting such bad dreams. If stress is the reason, go for a relaxation therapy. Regular exercise will help to relief stress. Early to bed and early to rise sleeping habit should be followed.
